Silicon Solar Cells - The Most Efficient Solar Material Today
Silicon solar cells are currently the most popular type of solar material, both for professional installations and for the do-it-yourself systems. Even though inorganic silicon cells are more expensive than the organic ones (polymer, dye-sensitized, etc.), silicon-based cells are also the most efficient ones.
Silicon solar cells are made of a silicon layer, each side of which is doped to create a positively and a negatively charged surface. Once the light hits the surface of the cell, the photons get absorbed and transformed into energy in the electric field. An inverter will convert this DC electric into AC electricity for home use.
There are different types of silicon that are used for the making of PV cells. The most expensive and efficient is monocrystalline silicon, followed by polycrystalline silicon, and concluded by amorphous thin-film silicon. Any type of silicon cells can be used to power the entire home, including the most energy-consuming appliances (microwaves, vacuum cleaners, large circular saws, etc.). If you want to power the most energy-consuming appliances in your home by solar energy, you will need a powerful inverter (e.g., a 4000W inverter).
Many homeowners decide to start with a modest number of silicon solar cells (assembled into panels), and then add to their number. If you choose this type of approach, you will be able to avoid paying one large lump sum for your system. Later, you can add new panels to your setup.
A solar powered system requires an initial investment. Is there any way for a homeowner to save money when investing into renewable solar energy? The easiest way to save a significant amount of money is by assembling and installing the system with your own hands. Even if you don’t know anything about wiring and soldering, chances are that you have a DIY friend or relative, who could become your helping hand. You would be able to save a lot of money, and perhaps just pay a small amount to your friend (as a thank you).
Being a mechanically-inclined person is the first step to installing a photovoltaic system. You will also need to educate yourself about where it's best to mount your system, how much of the solar material you would need to meet your electric needs, and so on. When choosing the location for mounting silicon solar cells, remember that they should be ideally mounted in a sunny and shade-free place (a rooftop, an open area in your yard, exterior sides of the house, etc.). To power a regular home with the power harvested by silicon solar cells, the system needs to produce roughly around 2-4kWh (2000W-4000W) of power.
In order to make your system work, you will need solar cells or panels, a charge controller, an inverter, wires, interconnection material, mounting hardware, and the basic tools. Your work would consist of soldering, wiring, and mounting the unit.
